Vitamin D Supplements Has No Beneficial Effect on Kidney Function to Patients in Pre-diabetes Stage

The common cause of kidney problems is type 2 diabetes. Low vitamin levels in blood pose a higher risk of various diseases such as kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. So, could consuming vitamin D supplements aid in protecting the kidney of patients with pre-diabetes?

According to a clinical trial, vitamin D supplement consumption has no beneficial effect on the kidneys of patients with pre-diabetes. But it was noted that the excellent effect of vitamin D is much greater on people with low vitamin D levels or poor kidney function.

Vitamin D Supplementation: Who Will Benefit?

A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of vitamin D supplements on kidney health of pre-diabetic patients. 2,423 adults are overweight or obese and diagnosed with pre-diabetes included in the study. The participants had randomly taken vitamin D3 4000 IU each day and placebo for an average treatment of 2.9 years.

According to experts, this study has the most prominent participants in vitamin D diabetes prevention clinical trials at this time.

Furthermore, it was seen that there are 28 cases with worsening kidney function and 30 in placebo, which means that vitamin D has no beneficial effect. Experts added that since vitamin D is taken by many, it is challenging to notice its benefits in clinical trials.

Overall, people who are not consuming vitamin D appear to have lower amounts of protein in their urine over time, making their kidneys healthy.
